Upcoming events for Summer 2009!

It's shaping up to be a busy summer for me.

Next weekend, I'll be vending on Saturday (the 20th) at the Fremont Fair, splitting the weekend with rivkasmom, who will be vending on Sunday.

On Saturday, July 11th, I'll be setting up a table at the Steampunk Garage Sale, located at the All Pilgrim’s Church (lower level), 500 Broadway E, Seattle, WA 98102, from 12-6pm.

For the first three weekends in August, I'll be at the Washington Renaissance Fantasy Festival, at its new home in Buckley, Washington.

And once I get through all this, I'll have a little time to recover for my next event in October, the month that marks my 10th anniversary as a business! I will be vending Steam-Con, the first annual Seattle Steampunk Convention.

Two new parasols

A vintage black parasol, fully lined in a floral print, with pink and ivory accents:

Pale tan vintage parasol, with ivory braid and shabby chic braided trim:

This piece was in rather sad shape when I acquired it, with several tips missing, and the black outer layer hanging loose, with one of the rib seams split. I tacked and darned and managed to salvage the original fabric, then applied trim to cover up the stitching. There are 10 ribs, and I alternated between an ivory braid and a pink trim threaded through with velvet ribbon. The top and edges are finished with a pink lace layered under a beaded trim, finished with more of the pink velvet trim. There are just short of 18 yards of lace and trim used in this piece.

This second piece was also in some disrepair, as it was heavily stained on the fabric fold between the ribs, and there were a series of holes in the fabric about 4" from the tip. Most of the holes were covered by the trim, but a few are still evident. It is decorated in two varieties of ivory trim, with cotton lace along the edges, and finished with a most unusual trim, made of scraps of a nylon fabric loosely pleated, then secured with a row of the same fabric braided. In this piece, there are just over 17 yards of trim and lace.

I recently refurbished three hats, and completed a few new jewelry pieces as well:

The Story behind the piece

Usually a piece speaks to me during the course of creation, and the story grows as the chain lengthens. These two pieces, however, were a mystery to me, and I relied on the input of friends and loved ones to help me find their voice.

The first one, The Guide, has at its kernel those two words suggested by my husband. His context was different, but the name stuck and things grew out of it.

The nurses who worked at a hospital just outside of a rather unsavory district of London saw many things on a daily basis that haunted their dreams. Resources being short and practices being as they were in such times, many of their patients were released only to cemeteries.

One man, notable only in his complete lack of understanding of English, was admitted one evening, with wounds inflicted most likely in a tavern brawl. The doctor’s treatment was cursory, as it was obvious he was suffering from internal injuries beyond their means to treat. He was given a cot in one of the wards, and a prognosis of death before dawn.

One nurse, not yet jaded as many of her compatriots, sat with him as much as her duties would allow, bathing his brow and murmuring nonsense in a soothing tone. It pained her that he would die alone, uncomforted, in a strange land where he understood no one.

Shortly before he died, he pressed a fragment of a watch into her hand, saying only “la guida.” Nothing else, not that it would have mattered, but they were the only words he spoke that stayed with her, mainly for the mystery they presented. He had not identified himself upon arrival, and no inquiries were made after his passing, so she felt no guilt about keeping the remembrance. The nurse kept it at first in a pocket of her dress, but eventually strung it to be worn.

The second piece, Banish Misfortune, prompted a reminiscence from my friend cajunsblues about experiences he'd had in disassembling and reassembling an apparatus. The name is cribbed shamelessly from the title of a traditional Irish piece of music.

The least senior engineer of the royal airship H.M.S Banish Misfortune had the frequent and rather annoying habit of, after completing a repair, handing a piece of machinery to her supervisor and saying, “Oh, by the way, I had this left over.” The pendant of this piece is one such remainder.

In the instance from which this piece originated, unlike all previous others, it was determined that the equipment was now running more smoothly than before its repair. The least senior engineer was soon after reassigned to the galley, as it was determined that she was much handier with a skillet than a wrench.

This necklace was included in the packet that contained her letter of transfer, with a personal note penned from her former supervisor and signed by the entire engineering crew wishing her better luck in her new posting.

Another large "new stuff" post, part one

I slacked off at my updates on new items posted. I'm just short of my goal of having 200 items listed for the holidays. Very image heavy post of several new pieces:

Firstly, a couple pairs of earrings, one made with watch springs, the other with spare bits.

Goldstone and Pyrite necklace and earrings - I'm calling this one "All That Glitters"

Two pieces made with old watch mechanisms, the first with citrine and the second with amber glass beads:

Glassware, part II

Had to split this into two posts, because apparently it was too many images for LJ in one.

And lastly, my all-time favorite, a huge vintage hand-blown glass goblet. The stem is a twisted ribbon of glass, and there's approximately 10 yards of wire in the wrapping. I keep saying I'm going to keep this for myself, but currently lack the proper place in which to display it.

Glassware, part I

So, when I first started the business, jewelry was the side line, and my main merchandise was glassware that I had wire-wrapped the stems. The market changed, and I also got tired of lugging it around, truth be told, and more and more I started to focus on other things. But I still have a few pieces left, and I was prodded recently by the owner/proprietor of Royal Cameo Glass in New Orleans to photograph my remaining stock. I still do pieces from time to time, especially as wedding gifts, and also do some custom orders, most regularly again as toasting glasses.

So here's a walk down Designs by Victoria memory lane:

As many of you already know, the Faire is cancelled for 2008 due to political shenanigans with permitting and such. Hopefully 2009 will make up for the loss. Please support the faire to make sure that we do not lose our momentum, and that we are able to continue to present you with weekendsp of wonder for years and decades to come. The new site, 2006 acres, is on a four year lease to own contract, and will be a wonderful home not only for the faire, but for other events year round. You can also contact the commissioners who will help decide the faire's fate, as the land still needs to be rezoned, and respectfully ask for their continued support:
